WiS Lesson 8O "Special Interest"

The original Writing in Stereo was published online back in the late 1980's.  Its purpose was to apply creative radio dramatics or broadcast journalism to all aspects of the teaching of high school English.  Each lesson included a lesson plan and notes.  I'm sharing these with you here.writingmini.jpg UNIT OBJECTIVE: (VIII) The student will practice the confident pursuit of information in the classroom simulation, "Special Interest." UNIT OBJECTIVE: (VIII) The student will practice the confident pursuit of information in the classroom simulation, "Special Interest." LESSON OBJECTIVE: (C, E, G, I, L, O) The student will, as MEDIA member, file a story on the simulation objective(s) immediately following. MATERIALS REQUIRED: Paper and pencil, forms for publication, script forms, place of print publication, recording equipment and space INTRODUCTION: Members of the media, you have a story to cover. Let's see who files the best report on the next part of the simulation. PROCEDURE 1. Editors act as coordinators, assigning stories or approving the suggested assignments of their reporters. They also cover stories themselves. 2. Various aspects of the simulation will suggest subject matter for stories. Suggest students look to the lessons of the previous unit for ideas for angles on these events. 3. Completed stories must be "published" using the appropriate form or recorded as part of a short newscast. EVALUATION FOCUS: The two news teams should become very competitive to file the more informative or sensational stories. Students throughout the class will come to rely on these "reports" for information on the activities and plans of competing interests.
